It’s not the words, but how you say them: Effects of referential predictability on the production of names and pronouns

چکیده
Findings from various domains suggest that predictability is an important component of language processing. We report two psycholinguistic experiments demonstrating that predictability also influences referential processing, in the form of reduced acoustic durations for predictable referents. However, we do not find evidence that predictability directly influences the likelihood of pronominalization, contrary to some prior claims. Instead, our findings reveal that the use and interpretation of pronouns is influenced by thematic role, independently of which referent is most predictable (i.e., most likely to be mentioned next). We also suggest that referents’ likelihood-of-mention is influenced by an interplay of syntactic and semantic factors, in particular the mapping between syntactic roles and thematic roles. As a whole, our results highlight the benefits of exploring not only lexical but also acoustic aspects of referential production.

Referential, Quasi, and Expletive Subjects in L2 English of Persian Speakers
The present study sought to investigate the acquisition of referential, quasi and expletive subject pronouns, three different types of obligatory subjects in English, by adult Persian speaking L2 learners of English at different stages of L2 acquisition. A Grammaticality Judgment Test and a Translation Test were designed and developed to elicit the participants' knowledge of obligatory subjects...
متن کاملAn Approach for Automatic Matching of Descriptive Addresses
Address matching (also called geocoding) is an applied spatial analysis which is frequently used in everyday life. Almost all desktop and web-based GIS environments are equipped with a module to match the addresses expressed in pre-defined standard formats on the map. It is an essential prerequisite for many of the functionalities provided by location-based services (e.g. car navigation). Sever...
متن کاملReferential processing in the human brain: An Event-Related Potential (ERP) study.
A substantial body of ERP research investigating the processing of syntactic long-distance dependencies has shown that, across languages and construction types, the second element in such configurations typically elicits phasic left anterior negativity (LAN). We hypothesized that these effects are not specific to syntactic dependencies, but rather index a more general cognitive operation in whi...
متن کاملYou Say Periklute, I Say Paraclete: Towards a Reconciliation Between the Bible and the Quran
The Quranic statement that Jesus predicted Muhammad by name is examined in light of the expectation of what the “kingdom of God” was. The concept of the kingdom of God as being the light or fire of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is contrasted with the Sufi concept of the “Light of Muhammad.” Pentecost could be the Light of Muhammad coming upon the apostles of Christ; the Light is the same, but kn...
